Frequently Asked Questions
- How can I find someone to ...?
- We recommend that you use the Attackpoint website to arrange relay teams, carpools, and shared lodging: www.attackpoint.org
Registration and Payment
- Where do I send my check and waiver?
- Don’t forget to print the waiver before closing your online registration window. Mail your payment and waiver to:
RMOF (or Rocky Mtn O Festival)
Nora Lund
PO Box 620844

USA
- Can we register by Email to you instead of online, in order to explain what we would like to run?
- We prefer that you register online, but if you need help, please email Nora at registrar.rmof@gmail.com and Nora will enter your registration. It is not possible for you to update an existing registration online so contact Nora if you have any changes.
- What if I really need to talk to Nora but I live out of the country?
- Nora can talk to you via Skype - which would be a free call. Just email her, give your Skype id, and make plans for a time for her to call you. We prefer not to publish her home phone number. We hope you understand.
- What is your cancellation policy?
- Our cancellation policy is identical to all NAOF events; you get money back if you cancel by a certain date. For example, NAOC, Sage, Barebones and the Washington events all say you can get all but $20 each back if you cancel by June 1.
- We are out of the country and would like to pay by credit card or cash at the event. We’ve had bad experiences wiring payments. What do you suggest?
- We chose to keep our costs lower by not accepting credit cards. Some non-US competitors have mailed bank checks in US Dollars and others plan to pay cash when they arrive in Colorado. If for any reason you are unable to attend, please cancel by June 1st before we incur additional costs for T-shirts and meals. Please tell us your plan in the “Notes and Special Requests” area in online registration.
Courses
- We're considering coming east to enjoy Colorado orienteering. We're not the competitive types and are wondering about the opportunity for recreational orienteering at your event.
- In July, the Colorado mountains are very beautiful and you’ll have many wonderful opportunities for fun in addition to orienteering! You can register for Open classes on most courses on all days. And, we offer non-competitive classes on Days 1, 2 and 5 on courses White, Yellow and Orange.
- We are from outside the US and planning to come to RMOF. Please help with course distances.
- We are very happy to have you join us! We have a variety of course lengths depending on the event. Climb will not exceed 4% except for the Brown course, which will not exceed 3% climb. All events are sanctioned by USOF so we must follow the rules as described here. See below for the class structure (M/F and ages). See below for more information about the Relay.
Days 1 & 2, and the Night O course lengths are “classic” lengths:
| Course | Optimum Winning Time | Length (approx.) |
| White (Beginner) | 25-30 min | 2-3 km |
| Yellow (Advanced Beginner) | 35-40 min | 3-5 km |
| Orange (Intermediate) | 50-55 min | 4.5-7 km |
| Brown (Advanced) | 45-50 min | 3-5 km |
| Green (Advanced) | 60-65 min | 4.5-7 km |
| Red (Advanced) | 60-65 min | 6-10 km |
| Blue (Advanced) | 75-80 min | 8-14 km |
Ultra-long course lengths: White, Yellow and Orange courses are similar to the “classic” lengths. All advanced lengths are as follows:
| Course | Optimum Winning Time | Length (approx.) |
| Brown (Advanced) | 60 min | 4-7 km |
| Green (Advanced) | 75 min | 7-9 km |
| Red (Advanced) | 100 min | 10-15 km |
| Blue (Advanced) | 145 min | 14-22 km |
Sprint course lengths:
Because the Sprint courses are not sanctioned, we are creating fun, quick thinking, short courses in different technical difficulty levels: Easy, Intermediate, Advanced for Juniors and Adults.
Relay
- Please explain how the relay works? How many legs, distances, and who can run?
- The Relay is a team competition that requires 2 to 4 runners. There are 4 courses (legs): Yellow, Orange, Green, and Red. All teams start the first leg at the same time (Mass Start). Each team must run all of the legs and the combined times for all legs determine the winning team in each category. Winning time for all categories: 150 minutes. Anyone can run – adults and children, male and female.
- What are the Relay points and categories for awards?
- Awards will be given to the three fastest club teams in each of the following categories (classes): 4 points, 8 points, and 12 points. Any team may run in any category BUT to be US champ eligible a team must have at least the number of points as the category, e.g., a team with 4, 5, 6 or 7 points is eligible for the 4 point category but is NOT eligible for 8 or 12 point category (although they could run in those categories — just not for the US Champs). A team with 12 points or more can compete in any of the three categories and be eligible for the US Champs in each category. A team with 3 points is NOT championship eligible. These classes are based on the total points of all team members.
Points are computed as follows:
- Ages 17-20 or 35-49 receives 1 point
- Ages 15, 16 or 50-59 receives 2 points
- Under 15 years of age or 60 and older receives 3 points
- A female orienteer receives 2 points, in addition to any age points.
Examples: 15-year old female = 4 points; 47 year old male = 1 point; 23 year old male = 0 points
- Can I still participate in the Relay if I don’t have a team?
- Yes - you may sign up for a team when you get to Colorado. We don’t ask you to pre-register your team through the online process, just to register that you plan to compete. Club teams will begin forming anytime but final team rosters must be submitted no later than one hour prior to the mass start. If you did not pre-register for the Relay and decide to compete when you arrive in Colorado, we will waive any late fee so that you may join in the fun when you find a team. Or, use www.attackpoint.org to find a team.
The Registrar will maintain a Relay signup sheet where Teams can register from the time that they arrive until one hour before the mass start. Competition Bibs will be issued 30 minutes before the mass start.
Course and Class Structure
- Can you please explain the course/class structure?
- Course class structure is divided by gender and age.
Individual competitors are divided into the following classes by gender (M for male, and F for female), and age as of December 31 of the current year. Eligibility (and ineligibility) for classes occurs at the beginning of the calendar year in which the competitor reaches a new age group. M or F categories followed by course color are competitive non-age specific (e.g. M-White, F-Yellow, etc.). In addition to individual competition, groups may compete in a separate gender-neutral category on beginner through intermediate level courses (Gr-White, Gr-Yellow, and Gr-Orange).
The following USOF Standard Course Class structure is the minimum we will offer. Competition formats other than individual foot orienteering competition may use different class structures as detailed in their respective sections.
We will offer Map Hike (Non-competitive) courses on White, Yellow, and Orange for Days 1, 2, and the Night-O only.
| Classic 51 Classes |
| White | Yellow | Orange | Brown | Brown | Green | Red | Blue |

- Age class ranges are indicated by a "-" and/or a "+". A "-" before the age means "and younger", the "+" after the age means "and older".
- Gender classes contain M for male and F for female.
- Classes containing the course color are age neutral.
- Classes containing Gr are groups, age and gender-neutral.
- Recommended splits for Red and Green when participation warrants it: Red X(M-20,M35+,M40+), Red Y(F-21+,M45+), Green X(M-18,M50+,M55+), Green Y(F-20,F35+,M60+,F40+,F45+,F50+,F55+,M60+).
- Splits for individual classes may be used for when the competition window fills up for a course.
Lodging and Rooms
- I am interested in staying at the Event Center, The Nature Place. Do you have prices for the rooms? How many people can stay per room? Do we make reservations directly with the Nature Place?
- The Nature Place is a very special place with the finest quality accommodations within 40 miles of all events! The cost is per person, not per room because the cost includes all of your meals and first class accommodations. Rooms and Suites have wi-fi, a small refrigerator and depending on the configuration sleep up to 6 people with a living room. This is the planned site for the sprint. You do need to make reservations directly with the Nature Place by June 15th. For more information see Lodging.
- The Nature Place sounds wonderful! Where else can I stay?
- The Nature Place is an awesome resort! We’ve only been able to reserve 29 room, therefore, we have listed other hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, cabins, and camping options in the Woodland Park and Florissant area. Remember that July is a heavy tourist travel time, so book your lodging early.
- We are flying to Colorado. Do we need to bring sheets or towels? Should I camp?
- The only time you need to bring sheets, towels or sleeping bags is when you are camping. Clean sheets are always provided at hotels, motels, etc. Even though it is July, it could be cold enough that you’ll need sleeping bags if camping. US Forest Service campgrounds do not provide showers. State Parks do provide coin showers and laundry. The Nature Place will provide a limited number of camp sites and you may pre-purchase meals.
- I would like to share a hotel room to save costs. How can I find someone else to split the cost with?
- We recommend that you use the Attackpoint website to arrange relay teams, carpools, and shared lodging: www.attackpoint.org
